About

Discover Boston through the eyes of New England artists at "What do you see?" – an exciting interactive art-viewing experience at the Cambridge Art Association’s CAA@CANAL Gallery.

Coinciding with Kendall Square's Canal District Winter Market, art facilitators Akanksha Upadhyay and Catherine Clarke will guide you through our current exhibition "Shipping Up to Boston," featuring artworks that celebrate the Boston experience.

These dynamic 20-minute sessions use the Visual Thinking Strategies framework to spark lively discussions and fresh perspectives – no art background required! Whether you're an art lover or simply curious, you'll leave seeing the artwork (and maybe Boston itself) in entirely new ways. Perfect for all experience levels, and even better with a friend – bring someone along to discover what the Cambridge Art Association is all about!

After exploring art together, step outside to enjoy the Winter Market's festive atmosphere, local crafts, unique gifts, and cozy beer garden. Come for the art, stay for the community, and experience the vibrant energy of Kendall Square's Canal District!

What is VTS?

Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) is an interactive teaching method designed to enhance visual literacy, critical thinking, and communication skills through the examination and discussion of art. In an art gallery setting, VTS encourages visitors to engage deeply with artworks by observing closely, sharing interpretations, and listening to others' perspectives. This approach fosters a dynamic and inclusive dialogue, allowing participants to construct meaning collectively and appreciate diverse viewpoints. Through guided questions such as "What is going on in this picture?", "What do you see that makes you say that?", and "What more can we find?", VTS transforms the art viewing experience into an active and participatory learning process.
