Join us for a historic evening of music by and about Florence Price (1887-1953), including the first ever chamber opera about this early 20th century African American composer. Florence Comes Home was commissioned by Shelter Music Boston and written by local composer Francine Trester to tell the story of Florence Price, an alumna of New England Conservatory, and the 2009 discovery of her lost papers and music that catapulted Price to international recognition.
Like so many of Shelter Music Boston’s audience members, Florence Price faced overwhelming obstacles - racism, sexism, financial stress, single motherhood, and more. Despite these challenges, Florence Price was the first African American woman to have a composition performed by a major symphony orchestra. The SMB ensemble will also perform Price’s own Folksongs in Counterpoint and share inspiring stories of Shelter Music Boston’s work in area homeless shelters and recovery programs.
The evening will feature a concert and include wine and hors d'oeuvres, as well as a silent auction. Shelter Music Boston will be honoring Laura McTaggart, U.S. Navy veteran and management consultant specializing in nonprofits, for her numerous contributions to our mission.
