Sharks in Danger: Silver Fins and a Silver Lining?

Shark! We hear the word, and our senses heighten with images of scything fins and serrated teeth. But what is the truth about these often vilified denizens of the deep? For this lecture, “Sharks in Dangers: Silver Fins and a Silver Lining,” New England Aquarium scientists Mark Smith and John Mandelman will discuss the cultural impact of sharks, their diversity and biology, and the context of marine conservation and human interactions. They will also discuss fascinating scientific research and advocacy work being done to understand the increasing conservation threats to sharks around the world. They will also preview work being done about sharks at the Anderson Cabot Center for Ocean Life and several other lectures coming up this spring about sharks.

Dr. Mark Smith is Vice President of Animal Care at the New England Aquarium. He has worked at institutions all over the world and has worked with a wide variety of organisms, including whales, dugong, penguins, shorebirds, otters, sea turtles, amphibians, seahorses, sea dragons, king crabs, jellyfish and corals, as well as a wide variety of land-based animals. Dr. John Mandelman is Vice President of the recently launched Anderson Cabot Center for Ocean Life at the New England Aquarium, which encompasses all of the Institution’s solutions-driven scientific research, engagement and conservation work. In collaboration with colleagues around the globe, his research focuses on the physiological ecology and conservation physiology of marine fish, cod, haddock, cusk, and sharks.
