Lauren McLaughlin’s young adult novel Send Pics tells the story of new friends Nikki Petronzio and Suze Tilman, whose loyalty is tested when Suze begins dating high school wrestling star Tarkin Shaw. Suze knows about Shaw’s reputation as a sexual predator, but all is not as it seems in their budding romance. A sexual assault at a party leads to blackmail, revenge, and ultimately an unintended death when Suze and her friends fight back against the predator and the system that allowed his assaults to go unchecked for years.


As the police and the press close in on the teens, they learn the hazards of fighting the Tarkin Shaws of the world. With characteristic empathy, Lauren McLaughlin’s fifth young adult novel is a riveting indictment of the culture of casual misogyny, slut shaming, and toxic masculinity that rallies itself to protect Shaw’s reputation and to cast his victims as the bad guys.
