The Dorothy Quincy Homestead Committee will offer the fourth in a series of outdoor tours at the Dorothy Quincy Homestead from 11am – 2pm on Saturday, August 21, 2021. Docents will welcome visitors and answer their questions as stories of the Edmund Quincy Family who first settled on the property in the 1630s are shared. Docents will also be recognizing the August wedding anniversary of Dorothy Quincy and famous patriot and Revolutionary rebel, John Hancock.

When Dorothy Quincy’s mother died in 1769, Lydia Henchman Hancock, aunt to John Hancock, became Dorothy’s chaperone and greatly influenced the romance between Dorothy and John. Along with Aunt Lydia, Dorothy witnessed the Battle of Lexington in April, 1775 from a bedroom at the old Hancock parsonage in Lexington before retreating to safety in Fairfield, Connecticut. It was there in Fairfield, at the homestead of Thaddeus and Eunice Burr, that Dolly and John reunited and finally married on August 28, 1775.

Visitors can also stop by the carriage house during their tour to see the lovingly restored Hancock carriage, a gift to John Hancock from the owners of an American privateer, the Civil Usage, which anchored in Newburyport, Massachusetts in 1777. Tours of the property will end promptly at 2 pm and a suggested donation of $5.00 to the Homestead is greatly appreciated. Due to on-going construction and conservation initiatives at the Homestead, the interior of the house will remain closed to the public. Please note there are no public restroom facilities available on site. Please check the website nscdama.org/quincy-homestead or our Facebook page Quincy Homestead 1686 for any schedule changes.

The Homestead was purchased in 1904 by the NSCDA-MA. The grounds and buildings are owned by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) and operated in cooperation with NSCDA-MA in a public-private partnership. Only dogs on leash are allowed on the property per DCR. Before you visit, please read the visitor safety information for the City of Quincy, Massachusetts at discoverquincy.com.
