Off-Kendrik is excited to bring back the Second edition of the South Asian-American theater festival on September 16th and 17th, at Multicultural Arts Center, Cambridge, MA.
Like last year, this year, we carefully curated 9 plays in 6 different languages ( English, Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Gujarati, and Kannada), all supertitled in English. This is a unique opportunity to explore the high-quality South Asian immigrant theater and heritage.
This year’s festival will premiere MustaQueen, a play that features Uma Paranjpe, the first woman to play the role of Pi in the acclaimed Broadway production, Life of Pi, which won 3 Tony awards. The play is written by a Pakistani-American, Fatima Atta Mann, a recent graduate of the Boston University Theater program, and directed by Zahra Budhwani, another fellow of Uma, from NYC's theater community, an actor, director, LGBTQ+ theater activist.
Other than that, we have a South-Asian adaptation of Neil Simon's Plaza Suite called "Subho Drishti", a satirical play called "Gandhi" based on folk-art from Gujarat called Bhawai, A famous absurd theater called "The March” (a.k.a Michhil) by famous Indian playwright Badal Sircar and adapted on the reality of Indian-American socio-political-cultural realities - to name a few.
This year, It's a multi-faceted mix of different forms and styles of theater, imbibed from South Asian cultural heritage and combined with American immigrant life.
