Sail where the sea serpent swam. Will he be back? Keep a sharp eye peeled! The Cape Ann Museum and Maritime Gloucester proudly and jointly present “Sightings of the Sea Serpent in August, 1817.” This special guided tour on the Ardelle (Captain Harold Burnham) will be narrated by Wayne Soini, the author of, The Gloucester Sea Serpent of 1817 (History Press, 2010). Separate myth from marine animal, fiction from fact as Soini recounts contemporary reports, quoting from affidavits of prominent locals who swore that they saw something amazing in the harbor in August, 1817. Take part yourself and relive on site the most extended and best documented series of sea serpent sightings ever. During the tour, Soini will point out each location of sea serpent sightings – and where Gloucester's own top gun Matt Gaffney, a ship's carpenter, took aim and fired at the two-ton creature on August 14, 1817.
Cash bar will be available on the 6:00 p.m. sail only.
Cost is $40 for Museum members / $50 nonmembers. Space is limited; registration required. Registration and information at (978) 281-0470 or maritimegloucester.org. Not a member of the Museum? Join now and get free or discounted tickets to all our events!
