Scouting America Greater Boston to Honor Three Impactful Leaders at Merrimack Valley Good Scout Luncheon

Congresswoman Trahan, The Community Group CEO Gonzalez Moeller, and Greater Lowell Boys & Girls Club Executive Director Hungler to receive Good Scout Award

Scouting America Greater Boston will honor three exemplary leaders and celebrate a new era in Scouting at the inaugural Merrimack Valley Good Scout Awards Luncheon on Monday, Oct. 27 at Lenzi’s in Dracut. The event will honor Maria Gonzalez Moeller, chief executive officer of The Community Group in Lawrence; Joe Hungler, executive director of the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Lowell; and U.S. Representative Lori Trahan.

The Merrimack Valley Good Scout Luncheon will recognize their impactful contributions to the betterment of youth and families. The Good Scout Award is given to people and organizations who have demonstrated integrity and genuine concern for others in their professional and personal lives. Recipients need not have been Scouts but must carry the “Spirit of Scouting” into their adult lives.

Gonzalez Moeller is a longtime community leader with a passion for strengthening community partnerships to expand opportunities for families and advocating for accessible early education and care for all children. She leads The Community Group, a nonprofit with a mission to create, manage, and nurture high-quality programs focused on education and related services that support families. The organization is chartering the first new Cub Scout pack to form in Lawrence since before the pandemic.

“I am truly honored by this recognition and grateful for the partnership between The Community Group and Scouting America,” said Gonzalez Moeller. “Bringing Scouting back to Lawrence is about more than just restarting a program, it’s about giving children the chance to discover their strengths, build character, and feel connected to something bigger than themselves. This collaboration reflects our shared commitment to creating experiences that empower children, strengthen families, and build a stronger community.”

Joe Hungler is a dedicated nonprofit leader, youth advocate, and community ambassador. As executive director of the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Lowell, he has worked to provide young people with opportunities, experiences, connections, and resources necessary to access a great future.

“We’ve seen firsthand at the Club how impactful it is when youth reconnect with the natural world and get back outdoors,” said Hungler. “Amid the technology explosion consuming kids and teens these days, Scouting is a critical resource providing kids and teens leadership skills, allowing them to benefit from the outdoors and develop a healthy appreciation for nature.”

Congresswoman Trahan, a Democrat, represents Massachusetts’ Third Congressional District, consisting of 35 cities and towns including her hometown of Lowell. The granddaughter of immigrants, Trahan advocates for programs that support local youth and families and uplift our communities. She serves on the House Energy and Commerce Committee and the subcommittees on Commerce, Manufacturing & Trade, Health, and Oversight and Investigations.

“Scouting America empowers young people with the skills, confidence, and character they need to thrive in school, in their careers, and in life. Just as importantly, Scouting teaches timeless values – kindness, service, respect, and responsibility – that strengthen our communities. I’ve seen firsthand the positive impact these programs have across the Merrimack Valley, and I’m honored to receive this award alongside remarkable leaders whose organizations also open doors for the next generation to succeed. At a time when our world needs more unity and compassion, Scouting helps light the way,” said Congresswoman Lori Trahan.

The Merrimack Valley Good Scout Luncheon will be held from 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM at Lanzi’s at 810 Merrimack Ave. in Dracut. For more information, please visit [email protected].

About Scouting America Greater Boston (The Spirit of Adventure Council)

Scouting America Greater Boston is one of the most diverse and impactful youth organizations in Massachusetts. The Council serves 76 towns and communities in Massachusetts, including all of Boston, and proudly supports more than 7,300 Scouts and 3,150 volunteers. We are home to the most popular Scouting facility in the nation, New England Base Camp in Milton, which, along with one other camp property, provides programs for more than 35,000 campers and guests each year. Base Camp is open to the public year-round and is widely considered the region’s top outdoor adventure location. The Merrimack Valley Good Scout Luncheon supports all youth programs administered by the Spirit of Adventure Council throughout the region. The Council has led a revival of Scouting in the Merrimack Valley and is leading the charge to get our children back outdoors and having fun. Earlier this year, The Boy Scouts' name officially changed to Scouting America, to reflect the diversity and inclusion that is a source of pride for Scouting and the Spirit of Adventure Council.
