Playing with Light at the Nanoscale: Finding Photons in Unusual Places

Evelyn Hu and her group are interested in new ways of generating light and how to create environments around those light sources that can selectively amplify “only” the light signals we wish to see. “Size does matter” in many of the experiments we carry out: creating structures at the nanoscale or smaller often lets us influence the behavior of light in ways we couldn’t do at larger dimensions. And we work with interesting new sources of light at the atomic or molecular scale, including “quantum dots” and even “defects” in otherwise “perfect" crystalline materials.
