Pianists Eleanor Perrone & Michael Manning present the first of two concerts devoted to the last four piano sonatas of Franz Schubert. On this program, the Sonatas in G Major, D. 894, and B-flat Major, D. 960.
The last four piano sonatas by Franz Schubert constitute a unit in the canon of Western art. No one is like the other, but each is a formidable, singular and sublime example of the late Classical style. As a group, they summarize the genre as received from Haydn, Mozart & Beethoven while recasting it for the Romantic generation and achieving depths of personal and universal expression unlike any that had come before.
