Trent Masiki, visiting assistant professor in the Department of African Studies at Dickinson College, will speak on "The freemasonry of the race": African American Influences in Evelio Grillo’s Memoir "Black Cuban, Black American."


Scholars in African American studies acknowledge the participation of Afro-Latinos in the New Negro Renaissance, but they often overlook the participation of Afro-Latinos in the Black Arts movement and the so called "post-soul" era of contemporary African American literature and culture. Studying the impact of African American literature, history, and culture on Afro-Latino writers reveals as much or more about the plasticity and diversity of “black identity” in the U.S. than studying the African American experience alone. This is particularly true in studying the life and literary production of the writer Evelio Grillo. In this talk, I use James Weldon Johnson’s concept of “the freemasonry of the race” to illuminate the African American narrative strategies and cultural tropes that formally structure and thematically inspire Evelio Grillo’s memoir "Black Cuban, Black American."
