Join the Friends of the West Roxbury Library for a special evening with Aube Rey Lescure, author of River East, River West, a Massachusetts Book Awards Fiction Honors title. Aube will share about her background and inspiration for the novel before reading select passages. The evening will conclude with a Q&A and book signing.
An inversion of the traditional East-to-West immigrant narrative, River East, River West examines the pursuit of the American dream through the eyes of Alva, a mixed-race teenager living in Shanghai with her American expat mother, and Lu Fang, her mother’s landlord and lover, who harbors his own complicated fascination with American culture. Through their alternating perspectives, an intimate portrait of Alva’s enigmatic mother, Sloan, gradually takes shape.

AUBE REY LESCURE is a French-Chinese-American writer and Editor-in-Chief of Off Assignment. Her debut novel, River East, River West, was a Massachusetts Book Awards Fiction Honors title and shortlisted for the Women’s Prize for Fiction 2024. Her fiction and creative nonfiction have appeared in The New York Times Magazine, Granta, Guernica, LitHub, and elsewhere. She grew up between Provence, northern China, and Shanghai, and now lives in Massachusetts.
