“The Liberty Series,” a pop-up art exhibition of paintings by Lowell artist Diana Zipeto, will be held from September 6th through the 30th at the former location of the Flower Mill, 183 Dutton Street in Lowell. The gallery is visible on Dutton and Market streets 24 hours a day and is open for viewing Saturdays from noon to 4 p.m. and by appointment.
An Exhibition Reception will take place on Saturday, September 18th from 5-7 p.m., with a VIP preview from 4-5 pm, and the public is invited to attend. A virtual exhibit will also be available at www.dianazipeto.com. According to Zipeto, the exhibition uses a shared symbol to explore questions about our country's identity. “I started the series four years ago as a way to think about this time of political uncertainty and tension,” explained Zipeto. “What are the truths and myths we hide behind? Who is really welcome here? What do we have in common in a polarized society?”
On Saturdays during the exhibit, Zipeto will be at work on a new Liberty painting. Visitors can stop in to view the series and talk with the artist while she works. Progress updates will be posted on social media, and the painting will be for sale at the end of the month.
Zipeto’s aim is for the exhibit to be one of the many public art efforts in Lowell. “When public spaces feel considered and cared about, it can boost a community's morale. Art can help people cope during the darkest of times. Whether it is providing relief from current events, or expressing the shared experience of them, art is a tool of hope.”
This exhibition and program is supported, in part, by a grant from the Lowell Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.
