Get ready, Boston. On Sunday, 8/18 and Monday, 8/19, August’s full moon will shine brightly over the city as a supermoon and a blue moon, creating a rare celestial treat. Known as the sturgeon moon, this lunar event will mark the first of four consecutive supermoons this year, each larger and more brilliant than a typical full moon.
The moon will appear full for three nights, from Sunday morning through Wednesday, with its peak occurring at 1:26 p.m. on Monday, August 19. While you won’t be able to see it in full glory until after sunset, some of the best vantage points for moon-gazing include the Memorial Drive, North Point Park Cambridge, and the BU Bridge for unobstructed views of the moon’s stunning rise.
What makes this full moon extra special is that it is a seasonal blue moon. Unlike the more commonly known "monthly blue moon," which refers to two full moons in one calendar month, this type refers to the third full moon in a season that has four full moons. This phenomenon happens rarely, adding to the magic of this event.
The next occurrence of a blue supermoon won’t happen until 2037!
As a supermoon, the sturgeon moon will appear about 14% larger and 30% brighter than usual, as it reaches its closest point to Earth. Named after the once-abundant sturgeon fish of the Great Lakes, the sturgeon moon is also called the green corn moon, barley moon, and fruit moon, reflecting the agricultural significance of this time of year.
