Panel Speakers


Eve Spangler is an Associate Professor of Sociology at Boston College and the author of Understanding Israel/Palestine: Race, Nation, and Human Rights in the Conflict. She defines her work as public sociology - work at the intersection of social research and social justice. Earlier in her career she focused on workers rights including the experiences of women in the workplace, the corporatization of professional work, and the rights of workers to safety at work. All of her work is grounded in a commitment to human rights.


Nadia Ben-Youssef is a lawyer and human rights advocate serving as Adalah's first USA Representative. Nadia has been working with Adalah since 2010 and led Adalah’s international advocacy efforts on behalf of the indigenous Palestinian Bedouin community in the Naqab (Negev) in southern Israel. Since 2014, she has been developing the organization's US advocacy strategy to influence American policy and practice in Israel/Palestine. Much of her work in the United States has focused on building a transnational movement against supremacy and state-sanctioned violence together with cause lawyers, community organizers, and artists across diverse movements for social justice. Nadia is a member of the New York State Bar, and holds a BA in Sociology from Princeton University, and a J.D. from Boston College Law School.


Sa’ed Atshan is an Assistant Professor of Peace and Conflict Studies at Swarthmore College. He previously served as a Postdoctoral Fellow in International Studies at the Watson Institute for International Studies at Brown University. He holds a PhD (2013) and an MA (2010) in Anthropology and Middle Eastern Studies from Harvard University. He also received an MPP (2008) from the Harvard Kennedy School and a BA (2006) from Swarthmore College. Atshan has served as a Lecturer in Peace and Justice Studies for more than five years at Tufts University. He has been awarded multiple graduate fellowships, including from the National Science Foundation, Social Science Research Council, Woodrow Wilson National Foundation, Andrew Mellon Foundation, and the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation. He is also the recipient of a Soros Fellowship and a Kathryn Davis Fellowship for Peace. He has worked for the American Civil Liberties Union, the UN High Commission on Refugees, Human Rights Watch, Seeds of Peace, the Palestinian Negotiations Affairs Department, and the Government of Dubai. He grew up in Palestine and is a Quaker and LGBTQ human rights activist.

Steve Chase is a longtime Quaker educator, activist, and writer. He is the author of the Pendle Pamphlets Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions? A Quaker Zionist Rethinks Palestinian Rights and Revelation and Revolution: Answering the Call to Radical Faithfulness. Steve is currently the Manager of Academic Initiatives for the International Center on Nonviolent Conflict in Washington, DC, and is a member of the Quaker Palestine Israel Network.
