“Permanence of Progression is the intrinsic feature of making Art – where ever transubstantiating matter of art-making is artists’ reflection on the world we find ourselves in while being an inseparable part of this world.” — Olga Shmuylovich
Flanked by architectural boundaries, a profound journey unfolds this summer at the Art Tunnel of Midway Gallery. PROGRESSION is a site-specific installation by Olga Shmuylovich that strategically utilizes a "tunnel effect" to guide viewers into an enveloping, evolving environment. Stepping into the corridor, visitors encounter long walls lined with a rhythmic (almost cinematic) sequence of expressive gesture sketches on black paper—captured during live figure drawing sessions at Midway—complemented by white paper face reliefs that pull the urgency of the human form directly into the viewer's physical space.
At the end of the Art Tunnel, the exhibition transitions into a spatial, living, developing installation made of raw sketches, 3D paper elements, and various mixed media. Taking shape beneath the gallery’s commanding, luminous "EXIT" sign, the structural piece carries a collective human and artistic weight. This deeper reflective meaning echoes themes from the artist’s previous projects while simultaneously pulsing with the vibrant energy of current moments and the natural progression of the creator. Traditional physical mediums and this ongoing installation process will be dynamically captured through the digital documentation of Petra Dankova and Nikolay Cherny. Ultimately, PROGRESSIONoffers a universally soothing reminder that art can ditch the pressure of rigid perfectionism and expectation—exploring the comfort found when the raw, unpolished process of making art becomes the ultimate destination.
