Practicing the Zen of Pencil Illustration

Express yourself in this fun and relaxing drawing class! Whether you are a professional artist or looking to try your hand at illustration for the first time, this weekend session will guide you through the basics of pencil drawing. In this class, we will cover basic techniques and advanced students can gain additional insight on how to improve their artwork. Students will have a completed drawing to share and many take-away skills to complement their own work. An image from nature will be provided for the online class.

Interested in illustration from an early age, Asia Scudder has trained extensively in how to capture natural form in pencil illustration. Her collegiate studies in environmental and wildlife studies merged her interests in an understanding of the science of form and function in nature’s complexities. Illustration is a practice in seeing, in patience and execution of technique. Scudder has brought this together in her innovative teaching style to mix storytelling with informative conversation on the object, while teaching the technical aspects of illustration.

Class Goals

Students enrolled in this course will be able to:

Learn about and use a range of fine craft pencils as tools for detailed illustration.
Gain advanced skills through a step-by-step, skill-building process including contour drawing, gesture drawing, and the more refined skill-building process of creating
Discover the subtleties of drawing an appearance of 3D form, building on light and shadow
Online Access

This class will be run through Zoom and a link will be provided 24hrs before the start of the class. Students will need to log into Zoom via a desktop or laptop computer.

Materials For Class

Bring your own pencils, charcoal and drawing paper. For new students, contact us for suggestions on materials or online vendors for purchase.
