From the shores of our rivers and lakes to the peaks of our highest mountains and the arches of our red rock canyons; from the herds of bison to the smallest spiders, this land has inspired humans for millennia.
Public lands include our national parks and monuments, our national seashores and wilderness areas and lands that were home to indigenous peoples long before the United States was formed. These lands are stewarded as places where we can all go for inspiration, recreation, contemplation and education. Lands where discoveries can be made. These lands and the lessons we still have to learn from them are not guaranteed. It is up to us to decide how these lands will be used.
The mason spider, the world’s only known eight-legged architect who builds a mound, was found by Maggie Raboin on public land. An interactive display inspired by this spider will be on exhibit with an invitation for people to create their own responses.
This pop-up exhibit was created to spark conversation about our interconnectedness with the natural world, and the importance of public lands. The exhibit asks, what are we leaving for future generations?
Exploring Unexpected Connections in Public Lands is in connection with the Boston Public Library’s Lowell Lecture with Terry Tempest Williams.
The exhibit will include select artworks previously exhibited as part of Spiders! Interconnectedness, Innovation and Stewardship, created in celebration of the centennial of the National Park Service and in honor of arachnologists Herbert and Lorna Levi.
The event is free. Refreshments (including beer and wine with valid ID) will be available for purchase at the Newsfeed Café.
