In this workshop students will learn to translate the overwhelming complexity of a landscape into a coherent statement.
Day one will take place outdoors at deCordova Sculpture Park. The class will cover site selection and composition, the importance of simplification, seeing the landscape in terms of masses and shapes, and seeing the landscape in terms of values (lights and darks.) Students will make several value compositions and sketches as well as a quick monochrome painting that captures light and shadow. Please note that masks and social distancing are required
Building on the first lesson, the second class will start with color mixing exercises, students will learn to create harmony through a limited color palette and start and finish their plein –air painting. The second class will be held virtually on zoom.
Individual assistance will be alternated with group critiques and discussions.
Some experience with acrylic painting required
