People of Chelsea Photography Exhibit in collaboration with
Chelsea Black Community Closing reception & panel discussion
Sunday October 6, 4pm-7pm; panel at 4:30P
Chelsea, MA August 13, 2024. The People of Chelsea (PoC) project is proud to be a part of Chelsea's 400th anniversary by announcing an exhibit at Spencer Lofts Gallery. Photographer Darlene DeVita and writer Sarah Putnam teamed up to document the diverse and resilient community of Chelsea, MA through intimate portraits and personal histories. For this exhibit, DeVita and Putnam have collaborated with the Chelsea Black Community (CBC ) to share stories that go back generations. Personal family photographs from the Chelsea Black Community, showing life before and after the Chelsea fire of'73, are projected during the exhibition.
The closing night event on October 6th from 4 pm - 7 pm at the Spencer Lofts Gallery includes a panel discussion at 4:30 pm moderated by JAKE Small, Chelsea resident and a justice-driven researcher, nonprofit leader, advocate, and artist. On the panel are Joan Cromwell, Chelsea Black Community President; Michelle Mirthes, community leader and advocate; Deb Cronin, long- time Chelsea resident and Union Carpenter; and Javier Villeda of Kliq Brand clothing.
Of the exhibit, Michelle Mirthes said.. “It’s such a privilege seeing my family’s roots showcased in such a loving & artistic way. Being a lifelong member of the Chelsea Black Community brings me an abundance of immeasurable pride and dignity.”
Darlene DeVita is a 20-year Chelsea resident and freelance photographer. She began the PoC project in 2016, taking a pop-up backdrop out on the streets to photograph her fellow Chelsea-ites. Because Chelsea is and has always been an immigrant city filled with stories that make up its layered history, she soon realized that the voices of the people she was photographing also needed to be heard. When she brought her bilingual colleague Sarah Putnam, a long-time freelance photographer and writer, into the project to help interview the subjects and edit the text, the project became one of words and pictures. This project is made possible and funded in part with grants from Chelsea Cultural Council and Chelsea Heritage Grant.
The work of the People of Chelsea Project will be on display this coming fall at MGH in Boston, MA.
