In order to make #BlackLivesMatter, we must #DefundThePolice!! As the call for dramatically shifting how we think about community safety grow stronger, with significant victories in Minneapolis, LA, and New York City, it's time to stand on the right side of history and take action in our own communities to divest from policing and invest in real community safety and wellbeing.
We are answering the call of demands from the national organization Movement for Black Lives (M4BL) and the Providence-based organization Direct Action for Rights and Equality (DARE) to defund the police and invest in communities. Many conversations lie ahead that will shape what redistribution looks like in Pawtucket. Participating in this rally is a public commitment to be part of this local process. Policing takes a huge share of almost every city budget, while many crucial community supports like health and mental health care, affordable housing, and education go without. We know that true safety comes from everyone having their needs met, and there’s nothing natural, inevitable, or just about how resources are currently distributed.
IMPORTANT: This rally is about DEFUNDING the police and NOT about reforming the police!! Signage ideas:
DEFUND NOT REFORM
DEFUND THE POLICE
Invest in Communities
Counselors Not Cops
Fund ______(Affordable Housing, Schools, etc. _ Not Police)
Real Public Safety is Possible
DEFUND ---> REDIRECT
Public Health Needs Police Dollars
Reform is not Enough!!
In order to make #BlackLivesMatter, we must #DefundThePolice.
For people without car access: This is primarily a car rally, but if you don’t have a car- no sweat! Come with your sign. We’ll encourage folks to spread out along the route to create visibility for our message.
For white-identified people considering attending: It’s time for white people to rise to the call of the moment and join in solidarity with Black-led, multiracial movements for the just future we all need.
Email us at [email protected] with any questions or you don't live in Pawtucket but want to coordinate with us to organize a rally in your town.
