If you have dabbled in pastels, have you ever been puzzled about how the artist arrived at that particular color? What does she know that you don’t? Well, she knows that there is a system. A color wheel can be a terrific tool in organizing and creating colors. This 4-week class will give you a solid foundation on the use of color when using pastels.

Special Notes
PLEASE NOTE: As of 09/14/21, ACA will require proof of full COVID-19 vaccination from staff, instructors, students, and all other participants – ages 16 and older – at indoor, in-person programs and activities. To read the full policy and to submit your Vaccination Record, please visit our website at: www.acarts.org/covid-19-updates
Required Supplies
PASTELS SETS
For this class, pastels come in two varieties:

Student Grade:
Alphacolor – 24 count
Blick – 24 count
Fabar-Castell – 24 count
Reeves – 24 count
If you purchase another brand, please have it contain 24 colors.

If you already have your own, please bring them.

PAPER
Bring in a charcoal or drawing paper pad (9 in x 12 in) for a start. Some brands are Borden & Riley, Canson, or Strathmore. We can talk about pastel papers later in the course.

MISCELLANEOUS
A firm support that is larger than the paper
Masking tape to secure the paper
Kneaded eraser
Tortillons (stumps) and/or cotton swabs
One or two rags
Latex gloves if you would like to keep your hands clean

EXTRAS
•You can use a strip of corrugated cardboard as a way to organize your sticks in a box.
• Make a chart with a few marks of each color and its name. As you run out, you can refer to the chart to buy the exact same color without any guesswork.
• If the sticks get coated with other colors, place the sticks in a container filled with either ground rice, semolina or cornmeal. Put the lid on and shake it gently. Sift out the material from the sticks and the sticks will be clean.
