The Japanese concept of the notan, the dark/light design, is arguably the backbone of composition. Studying this idea reinforces the understanding that every shape—positive and negative— is essential to the whole. It is also readies artists for the quick decision making required for plein air painting. We will first work with black and white paper to create freeform and observed notans, and then concentrate on using a notan design as an acrylic underpainting for still life, landscape painting from photographs and if weather permits, outdoors. First 30 mins of first class is a slide show, last hour of last class is an appreciation session. Handouts. Supply list on registration.
