Boston could witness a rare northern lights display visible to the naked eye this Thursday night, thanks to a powerful solar storm. The Space Weather Prediction Center has issued a "severe" geomagnetic storm watch, with the potential for the aurora borealis to be visible across much of Massachusetts.
The storm, caused by a coronal mass ejection from the sun, is expected to hit Earth on Thursday, October 10, 2024. Clear skies are forecast for Boston, making it an ideal night for viewing. The best time to catch this rare event will be late in the evening, so head to a dark spot and look north!
This aurora display could be as powerful as the one Boston witnessed back in May 2024.
Dates: Thu Oct 10 – Fri Oct 11, 2024
