The Dutch Republic was one of Europe’s leading dairy producers in the 17th century, owing to its pastures and drained polders. Grazing herds yielded vast quantities of milk, butter, and cheese, which were exported across the continent and consumed at nearly every meal.
Join curatorial fellow Susanne Bartels for a talk about the importance of dairy production in 17th-century Dutch society and how it is reflected in the artworks and literature of the time.
This gallery talk is part of our New on View series, highlighting recent gallery installations and presenting new insights into recent acquisitions or old favorites.
