Barbie Matthews is a Classical Guitarist pursuing a Bachelor of Music Degree at the New England Conservatory of Music, studying under virtuoso guitarists Eliot Fisk and Jérôme Mouffe. Barbie is a three-time recipient of the NEC Community Solo Performance Fellowship, where as a fellow, she has played numerous solo performances throughout Boston. Passionate about Jazz studies, Barbie has played in NEC Jazz ensembles, and she has studied Jazz guitar privately with esteemed guitarist Brad Shepik.
In 2018, she was selected to play in the NEC Jazz Residency Ensemble with Jason and Alicia Moran. Barbie is pursuing a Minor in Music Theory under acclaimed musicologist and composer Dr. Bert Van Herck, researching musical forms and their development from the Romantic Era into the Second Viennese School. Barbie is an active educator of Music Theory at NEC, where she teaches undergraduate level courses in Keyboard Harmony, teaching the fundamentals of voice leading, harmony, and counterpoint. She also works as a Teaching Assistant for Music Theory courses at NEC.
