Giovanni Bottesini - Gran Duo Concertante, dedicated to the memory of Jan Schwaner
Elisabetta Brusa - Merlin, for orchestra, Op.20
Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov - Scheherazade
Our first piece, Bottesini's Gran Duo Concertante, is dedicated to long-time WSO cellist and WSO board vice president Jan Schwaner, who passed away on July 22. Jan joined the WSO in 1994 and joined our board in 2006. A joyful presence in the orchestra, Jan was an important part of our outreach program as part of the WSO String quartet. Jan studied with our cello soloist, Emmanuel Feldman, for several years.
Italian virtuoso Giovanni Bottesini was the finest double bass soloist of the 19th-century. Known as the “Paganini of the Double Bass”, he wrote his Gran Duo Concertante in 1844. We are fortunate to feature Emmanuel Feldman, Cello and Pascal Delache-Feldman, Double Bass, as soloists in this great piece.
Elisabetta Brusa's symphonic poem, Merlin, for orchestra, Op.20. Written in 2004, this describes one of history's best loved legendary figures. "This melody makes use of ethereal harmonies and magical instrumental effects which enchant the imagination of the listener, creating a solemn and spellbinding atmosphere. Merlin’s disappearance into a puff of smoke is brilliantly and wittily described in the work’s finale." - Gilberto Serembe
We end the program with one of the most evocative stories in classical music, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade. Rimsky-Korsakov's dazzling, colorful orchestration and melodies are based on the tales of One Thousand and One Nights.
The concert will be at MassBay Community College in Wellesley with a reception after the concert.
