Dance Currents Inc. with the support of Newton Community Pride, the Newton Cultural Council, Massachusetts Cultural Council and the Newton Cultural Development office is presenting Moving Forward in Place, a dance/film performance. We are delighted to be part of the 10th annual Linda Plaut Newton Festival of the Arts. The performance is an exploration of how art spaces, art forms and individuals grow in their milieu. It is also a celebration of collective action and interaction, a way to move forward in place.
We are hemmed in by many constraints on our health, education, housing and legal systems. What with the overarching climate crisis, fear of deportation for immigrants and their children, and government unreliability we need each other to do something about our world. During the McCarthy era artists faced these kinds of constraints as well. They sought solutions in their art, specifically dance, by creating work which dealt squarely with social issues, was accessible to the public and well crafted. This was part of the philosophy of the New Dance Group. This piece of modern dance history as well as modern dance’s evolution will be shown in the film, To Feel the Earth and Touch the Sky, Living the Legacy of Modern Dance. Kathy Hassinger co-wrote and directed the film which is now streaming on the PBS app. Yvonne Rainer’s dance, Diagonal, taught by her rehearsal director, Pat Catterson will be presented as another step in this unique and wide-ranging history.
Both the Scandinavian Living Center and the Nathaniel Allen House have developed into spaces which present all artistic disciplines. Because of the efforts of visionaries like Linda Plaut, the Newton Cultural Alliance, and the generosity and desire for community events in the Scandinavian Living Center, Newton has become a thriving artistic community. The dances, Still/Moving and Places on the Way show a closer, more personal look as to how we, as individuals, move forward. The music for these last two pieces will be played live by Simone Mead.
Modern Dance is really about the heart of humanity - it's joys, sorrows, and inevitable struggles. (A paraphrase of Martha Graham's). The dances and film present how modern dance has evolved into an art that can effectively touch, inspire, and change us so we may face the difficulties of our time.
