The book of hours, an illustrated prayer book, was popular with lay men and women of the late medieval/early Renaissance period for over 300 years. Why? Wieck’s lecture, illustrated with slides, will answer this question by exploring the texts and images to be found within their pages. The discussion will also explore this era’s veneration of the Virgin Mary and obsession with death.

For those who cannot make it to Roger Wieck’s lecture in person, the McMullen Museum invites you to view this event live online at 2:00 p.m. at http://bit.ly/2azs5rg. Virtual attendees may ask questions during the Q&A segment via Twitter at #McMullenLive.

Roger S. Wieck is the Melvin R. Seiden Curator and Department Head of Medieval and Renaissance Manuscripts at the Morgan Library & Museum, New York, where he oversees a collection of some 1,200 objects. Prior to working at the Morgan, Wieck held curatorial positions at the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore and at Harvard’s Houghton Library. Wieck is a world authority on medieval books of hours, and has written numerous books on the subject, including "Painted Prayers: The Book of Hours in Medieval and Renaissance Art," "Time Sanctified: The Book of Hours in Medieval Art and Life," and "Late Medieval and Renaissance Illuminated Manuscripts, 1350–1525, in the Houghton Library." Wieck teaches a course on illuminated manuscripts at the University of Virginia’s Rare Book School.
