Egyptian blue, the first synthetic pigment, evolved through pyrotechnological advancements in ancient Egypt over 5,000 years ago. In this workshop, you’ll learn about related scientific research and exciting art historical discoveries from conservator Lisa Barro; observe ancient examples of Egyptian blue in objects from the museums’ collections; and experience the unusual physical characteristics of the raw ingredients of Egyptian blue by creating the pigment yourself, guided by conservator Carolyn Riccardelli. You’ll also combine Egyptian blue pigment with gum arabic to make your own blue watercolor paint!
