Contemporary Improvisation students have been working this week with Doris Duke Artist Award recipient and NEC jazz alumna Matana Roberts.
While at NEC, Roberts will conduct a week-long residency, Monday through Friday, October 16-20. In addition to the Wednesday concert, public events are planned on Tuesday, October 17 at 10 a.m. when she will discuss her music and on Friday, October 20 when she will host an improvisation workshop.
During this residency, Roberts will share various frameworks where she is present. She will speak to students about the many different areas of the sound world that she inhabits and teach them great possibilities for their own work through some of her strategies based on her general work process.
Roberts's works include Coin Coin, a planned 12-part album series exploring themes black history, femininity, and identity. She has been a guest curator at the Stone and Artist in Residence at the Whitney Museum, among others.
From her website:
“At my artistic core, I am firmly dedicated to creating a unique and very personal experiential body of sound work that speaks to, and reminds people of all walks of life to reach, stand up, give voice, regardless of difference, created from mere labels of intellectual classification. In my ideal world the idea of 'difference' is an illusion designed only for the purpose of modern economic division and elitist intellectual hierarchy. Through my life's work, I stand creatively in defiance.”
