WHO/WHAT: Massachusetts College of Art and Design (MassArt) announces the 30th Anniversary MassArt Auction, which will take place on Saturday, April 27, 2019 in the Design and Media Center at MassArt. The live auction will occur in the Design and Media Center Atrium with silent auction art installed in surrounding spaces. The Auction will feature more than 300 works of art in a range of media by emerging and established artists. The 2019 live auction will include 33 pieces by internationally renowned artists, including Alex Katz, Elizabeth Peyton, William Wegman ‘65, and Jack Pierson ‘84, who have been featured in past MassArt Auctions, and Nathalia Edenmont and Martine Gutierrez who are new to the Auction this year, as well as local artists such as June August, Dinorá Justice, and MassArt instructor Rania Matar.
This year’s Auction also features nine original commissions, in both the live and silent auctions, the most commissions ever offered at the MassArt Auction. These commissions offer the opportunity to purchase a piece of art that will be created especially for, or even featuring, the winning bidder. Featured commissions include a wall mural by Sophia Ainslie for a home or office space, a sculpture of a repeating stack of sandwiches by Justin Richel ‘02, and a private sitting with photographer Johnny Tang for one of his iconic clone portraits inspired by the buyer’s personality.
The MassArt Auction annually draws a crowd of over 700 collectors and art enthusiasts seeking to view and purchase exceptional contemporary art while supporting the College. The MassArt Auction has raised more than $1 million in each of the last four years. All proceeds provide vital scholarship aid and academic program support for MassArt students.
