Free admission for all!

Join us for our annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Open House, presented in partnership with Citizens. This year, the MFA offers free admission—including access to special exhibitions—for Massachusetts residents. Celebrate the legacy of Dr. King by surrounding yourself with art, culture, and community! And don’t miss the magnificent art of Roxbury’s own Ekua Holmes in “Paper Stories, Layered Dreams,” on view through January 24, 2022.

For 20 consecutive years, Citizens has sponsored the MFA’s MLK Day community celebration—allowing the Museum to welcome more than 120,000 visitors into our galleries to enjoy free performances, tours, talks, art-making activities, and more.

Events and Activities:

• Take-Home Art Kits
10 am–3 pm
Lower Rotunda

“Paper Stories, Layered Dreams” showcases more than 40 works of art from Ekua Holmes’s award-winning children’s book illustrations. Pick up an art kit with everything needed to create your own masterpiece inspired by Holmes’s beautiful collages and the themes of community, self-determination, advocacy, and education. Kits available while supplies last.

• Music by DJ WhySham
11 am–2:30 pm
Shapiro Family Courtyard

Enjoy music from Dorchester native DJ WhySham, a visionary, activist, traveler, sister, godparent, and Boston’s “community DJ.” She is a three-time nominee for DJ of the Year at the Boston Music Awards and was the only woman nominated for Producer of the Year at the the 2021 New England Music Awards. In 2021, she was named to WBUR’s Artery 25 list of artists of color transforming Greater Boston’s cultural landscape.

Proof of COVID-19 Vaccination Required:

Effective January 15, all visitors age 12 and older are required to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination to enter the Museum in accordance with the City of Boston’s mandate.

See our proof of vaccination policy about what forms of proof are accepted and the phased timeline for who needs to supply proof.
