Just when you thought the growing season was over! Nope, here in Somerville we have a native crop that thrives in the coldest months: maple syrup.
Come learn how to tap sugar maple trees in our very own city! We will be meeting on Tufts campus in front of Paige Hall and will be tapping trees around the campus.
We welcome everyone to join us on the first step of our tree-to-pancake maple syrup journey. No tree tapping experience is required.
If you would like to help collect sap from the maple trees after this date, please email email@example.com
for more information.
What began 12 years ago as the small-scale tapping of a few trees on Tufts campus has now grown into a fully-fledged educational project that involves organizations and individuals throughout the Somerville community. The sap that you tap in January will be used by Groundwork staff and trained community volunteers who teach a four-week Maple Sugaring curriculum to second graders at public schools across Somerville.
Keep an eye out for other events of the Maple Syrup Project in winter 2018: Maple-inspired brunches at The Independent and Aeronaut as well as our culminating, much anticipated, annual Maple Syrup Boil-Down!
