Boston’s very own Major League Quidditch (MLQ) team is opening its season at home on Saturday, June 9.

The Boston Night Riders are hosting a three-game series against their division rival, the New York Titans, at Joe Moakley Park in South Boston from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. The event is free and open to the public.

The Night Riders are one of 16 teams across the United States and Canada in MLQ, the highest level of real-life quidditch in North America. MLQ is partnering with Athlete Ally this season to promote LGBTQ+ equality and inclusion in sports. The Night Riders’ season opener coincides with Boston’s Pride celebration.

Boston is the league’s most successful team. The Night Riders won the first two league titles in 2015 and 2016 and boast an all-time 39-2 record. The team is looking to bounce back this season from a devastating loss to the Austin Outlaws at the 2017 MLQ Championship.

Quidditch is a gender-integrated, full-contact sport particularly popular on college campuses around the world. The rules were adapted from J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter book series, incorporating elements of basketball, rugby and dodgeball.

The Night Riders have an undefeated 11-0 record against New York, but needed clutch snitch catches to knock off their division rivals in 2015 and 2017. The Titans have historically been Boston’s toughest challenge in the East Division.

After previously hosting their home games in Brookline and Newton, the Night Riders are taking their talents to South Boston, playing inside the city limits for the first time.
