Madho Lal Hussain, also known as Shah Hussain, was a 16th-century Punjabi Sufi poet and mystic famous for his kaafis, which merge divine love with human longing. His deep spirituality, non-conformism, and complex relationship with Madho Lal—a Hindu boy from Shahdara—embodied the Sufi ideal of love that transcends religious and societal boundaries. The play Madho, written and directed by Sarbpreet veerji and based on his book The Sufi’s Nightingale, fictionalizes Shah Hussain’s life in Lahore’s Bazaar-e-Husn, capturing his transformation into the "King of the Sufis" through his passionate attachment to Madho and the resulting spiritual and emotional turmoil
