The Ludovico Ensemble performs two recent and contrasting ensemble works by John Aylward and two by Julia Werntz from different periods, alongside Three Stones, a work by Mischa Salkind-Pearl written for the ensemble in 2010. In different ways, both of Werntz's pieces capture the non-verbal rhythm of thoughts as they move through the body and achieve kinds of corporeal expressions, sometimes human and other times animal. Aylward's works address similar energies but from a mythological standpoint, responding to the myths of Narcissus and Echo and Ananke and the Fates. Salkind-Pearl’s piece is constructed out of canons which do not follow conventional rules—the first is in rhythmic unison while the pitches are ordered canonically, and the remaining ones treat rhythm flexibly while each employs a single melody.
