LA BOUM QUEER FRIENDLY DANCE PARTY TURNS 10!!

JAMAICA PLAIN, MA— La Boum is a monthly queer friendly dance night at Bella Luna & The Milky Way. On Friday, May 3rd La Boum will turn an impressive 10 years old! Before La Boum, there was Gross Anatomy, which was a monthly queer-centric, DIY, Indie dance night, often with a line bending around the corner on late Wednesday nights at The Milky Way, a bowling alley on Centre Street in JP.

Former Gross Anatomy DJ and La Boum founder, DJ Stella Ayala-Kronos explains the ethos of what began that night “When I started at Gross Anatomy with Dafna Garber and Patrick Kelly, none of us had mixing skills, just pure love for dancing and keeping the party alive with the right song selections, we had the opportunity to start Gross Anatomy from Mozz because we were regulars at Pop Nation and Queeraoke.”

In 2010 as time and change happen and shifts most things, Gross Anatomy was not left unaffected and evolved, blooming into what is now La Boum. The name change is an homage to the 80’s French pop cult classic movie meaning “party” and was a conscious choice made by resident DJ Stella and Shailah Maynard when the Milky Way paraded its way from Hyde Square to the Brewery Complex.

Since then La Boum has been every first Friday of the month and is a queer space where people have shimmied and shaked the night away on the dance floor. If you've been to La Boum, it's likely that you've partook in it’s time honored traditions of singing along to Whitney Houston's ‘I Wanna Dance with Somebody’ (with the skip) and Madonna's ‘Like A Prayer’ always at midnight.

After ten years what is the best thing about La Boum? “I think what I love about it is that there are old regulars, regulars, and new regulars.” says DJ Stella, “We used to play a lot more 80s, new wave, one hit wonders, and house music at the start and it has evolved into something new, but the good vibes haven't changed at all.”

On Friday, May 3, 2019 at 10PM Bella Luna and the Milky Way we invite you to celebrate with us to hear the classics for the 120th time! With DJ Stella on the ones and twos, spinning pop, reggaeton, hip hop, dance, Beyoncé, Britney, Cardi, Gaga, Robyn, Mariah, Carly Rae, and so much more!
