Strength & Sensitivity is a touring concert experience which blends percussion music, poetry readings, and multimedia exploring the impact of stereotypes, social-emotional intelligence, and the intersection of art and the gender equality movement. The program blends original works ranging from rap to funk, classical, experimental, musical theatre, and soul, within the framework of poetry from Gloria Anzaldua and Maya Angelou, music by emerging composers, and contemporary classical heavy hitters Julia Wolfe and John Cage. Featuring Red Shayedz, a rapper and hip-hop musician who draws from her diverse background to create genre bending hip hop to empower young women, Brian Calhoon’s Marimba Cabaret, which combines a love of theater, singing and storytelling, often performed in heels, the blues of everyday living adopts new rhythms in post-post-R&B soul group Dinquinesh She-Ra and the Nauta Republic, and The Thread Ensemble with visual artist Marah Fellicce, making tunes out of her sculpture,”Poetry Puzzle”, plus the world premiere of “Not My Home” by Maria Finkelmeier, and dueling drum kits from Boston Conservatory percussion students lead by Doug Perkins.
Tickets, $10 for students and $15 for general, are available here: https://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/4065448
