For years, data has shown that boys and men experience loneliness, anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts/attempts, and other self-harming behaviors at a greater rate than their female counterparts. If we don’t put every effort behind breaking down the stigma associated with depression and other types of mental illness, this disparity will worsen and adversely impact families and communities of future generations.

The event, Just Heal Bro, is not a cure-all, but an opportunity to increase education around mental health and suicide awareness among men of all ages, with hopes of promoting healing through guided discussions and connections to local community partners. We want to create a space where boys and men feel safe to be vulnerable with each other and begin unlearning the societal definition of what it means to be “a man” - all while encouraging the building of community.

Just Heal Bro will be hosted by former NFL player and current mental health expert, Jay Barnett, and will include an acoustic performance by rapper and Dorchester native, Caleb McCoy. See below for each of their bios. This special event will take place on Friday, May 19, from 6:30pm – 9 p.m., at Bird Street Community Center in Dorchester, MA.

Please be advised that no heavy boots are allowed in the event space – only sneakers.
