Journeys in Sound presents a special summer concert with two bands I have greatly admired but have never performed in the series. It will be a night of early jazz with unique arrangements combined with a dash of dadaism by Petite Feet. Also sharing the bill will be the Factory Quartet, a group that got it's start learning and practicing the compositions of Ornette Coleman but has since developed into an original ensemble playing music composed and arranged by each of it's members.


Petite Feet is the collective name of three friends and New England Conservatory alumni: pianist Shane Simpson, saxophonist Travis Bliss, and drummer Jonathan Starks. As a band, they are dedicated to performing their arrangements of the ragtime music of Scott Joplin, drawing inspiration from player pianos, minimalism, dance, glitch art, and comedy duo Tim and Eric. Every Petite Feet performance is a step into the past as well as the future, bound to offer a wild and memorable time.

Factory Quartet is a band that puts it's primary focus on developing new sounds and re-imagining traditional forms from both the jazz and rock idioms. The group formed in 2015 and after their self-released debut of "Wynton Was Right Vol. 1 & 2", the quartet has gone on to perform in and around the Boston area with newly added member Neta Raanan on tenor. At the start of 2017, they started an exciting collaboration with local tap dance company Subject:Matter in a multi-disciplinary performance titled "Something Else!!!". The music, drawing influence from Ornette Coleman, Thelonious Monk and Duke Ellington, had its debut shows at the Deborah Mason School of Dance, as well as The Dance Hall in Kittery, Maine & How to Fix the World Fest in Somerville.

The Factory Quartet will comprise of Matt Hull on trumpet, Neta Raanan on tenor saxophone, and Max Ridley on upright bass. Note that The Factory Quartet will be without their drummer, Dors Herskovits, this evening due to a previous commitment.
