Passepartout Duo are two musicians drawn together by their shared values of art, people, and travel. Pianist Nicoletta Favari and percussionist Christopher Salvito hail from Italy and America respectively, and are dedicated to organizing performances world-wide with the hope of bridging the gap between cultural music ideologies and engaging a wider audience for contemporary classical music. Passionate about the piano-percussion instrumentation and the various configurations it can assume, the ensemble supplements its promotion of the current repertoire with a continual search for new composers and collaborations.

The members of the ensemble first met during their stay as resident artists with the Atlantic Music Festival’s contemporary ensemble. There, they were responsible for premiering and recording the works of 40 young composers. Shortly after, the ensemble was invited for a residency at the Banff Centre in Alberta, Canada. At the residency, the group filmed and recorded Wally Gunn’s piece Can You Hear Me?, and was featured in two performances at the Centre. In March of 2016, the group organized a weeklong tour in Europe with concerts in Paris, Chichester, Verona, and Basel. The members of the group both received fellowships from the Yale School of Music's Norfolk Chamber Music Festival in the summer of 2016. In August of 2016, they were resident artists at the Crosshatch Center for Art and Ecology's Hill House where they filmed site-specific videos of two short works by Nikolai Kapustin. The ensemble currently resides in Brussels, Belgium where they are participants in MaNaMa, the Ictus Ensemble's master's program at the Royal Conservatory / School of Arts Ghent.

For this program, Passepartout Duo will perform works by Hannah Lash, Georges Aperghis, Andy Akiho, Wally Gunn, and Steve Reich.

Julian Loida’s commitment to music has taken him from St. Louis to Bloomington to Boston—and what he’s accumulated along the way makes him one of the unique percussionists in this area.

Born in St. Louis, Julian developed an intense affinity for percussion—not just drumset, but in all types classical ensembles as well. This talent took him to the halls of Indiana University, where he continued to broaden his horizons by not only studying with the prodigious classical faculty, but with master percussionist Michael Spiro. This meant that Julian gained an absolutely comprehensive knowledge of all types of folkloric drumming and a completely authentic sound on all types of traditional instruments. At the moment, Julian is pursuing a master’s degree at the New England Conservatory, where he continues to teach and perform in a plurality of styles. For this event Julian will be joined by painter Rebecca Ness who, on some pieces, will create art inspired by what Julian is playing.
