Lesley University invites the public to a lecture with international best-selling author and Harvard professor Jill Lepore. This free virtual event will be held Wednesday, Oct. 14 at 5 p.m. EST on Facebook Live.
Lepore will discuss her latest book, “This America: The Case for the Nation,” in which she maintains that while America has often failed to honor its founding principles of “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness,” it still holds the promise of achieving these goals — goals which, she believes, are as vulnerable as they’ve ever been in America’s history. To achieve this promise, she argues, we need leaders motivated by love, not hatred, and whose vision of America is broad and inclusive, not narrow and discriminatory.
The lecture is part of Lesley’s CLAS Reads, a program of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) in which all first-year students read a common text followed by a visit from the author.
“This book was chosen for its timeliness and importance,” says Lesley Associate Professor of Humanities Rob Wauhkonen. “Lepore explores her fear of the current administration’s embrace of nationalism, which she defines as ‘less a love for your own country than a hatred of other countries and their people and a hatred of people within your own country who don’t belong to an ethnic, racial, or religious majority,’ and how that threatens to divide the country with tragic consequences.”
A Q&A will follow the lecture.
