Spend four days immersed in shaping wood by hand in this intensive exploration of carving and chair making. Students will first use subtractive techniques to carve a spoon from a solid block of wood and design stools using full-scale drawings before roughing lumber to size and cutting the joinery, which makes this additive project possible.
Next, students will focus on shaping and sanding these rough parts before diving into assembly, painting, and finishing the projects. Isaac will guide students through the entire creation process, from selecting wood to finishing, while allowing ample opportunity for creativity in design. By the end of the class, students will have completed their two projects and will leave with knowledge of many of the fundamental hand tools used in woodworking. While this workshop will take advantage of the fully equipped shop at the Eliot School, there will also be a discussion about how to continue stool making at home with a relatively small kit of tools.
