Black holes are among the most mysterious and powerful objects in the Universe—regions where gravity is so intense that not even light can escape. In this course, we will explore what black holes are, how they form, and how they influence the galaxies that host them. We will cover the main categories of black holes—from stellar-mass remnants of dying stars to the supermassive giants at the centers of galaxies—and discuss one of astronomy's greatest puzzles: how the first black holes formed and grew so quickly after the Big Bang. Along the way, we will examine real astronomical data from space telescopes like JWST, Hubble, and Chandra, and explore interactive simulations that show what the world would look like from the edge of a black hole. This is an accessible, engaging introduction—no math required! You will leave with a deeper understanding—and perhaps more questions—about what lies at the heart of cosmic darkness.
