WHAT: The New England Aquarium’s Lowell Lecture Series presents a discussion on how the Aquarium is advancing innovative, ethical, and sustainable approaches to acquiring animals for aquariums. The panel will include aquarists who manage the Aquarium’s larval fishes program, whose work includes producing live foods in-house, maintaining broodstock, and raising juvenile fish at both the Aquarium’s Animal Care Center in Quincy, MA, and at Roger Williams University. These efforts helped launch a collaborative model among Association of Zoos and Aquariums members, allowing them to share costs and expand access to sustainably produced fish.
As climate change continues to reshape fisheries and marine habitats, innovations like these are increasingly important. The discussion will explore how science, collaboration, and adaptive management are driving progress toward more sustainable and resilient aquarium collections, now and into the future.
WHEN: Wednesday, March 11 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. with a cash bar available.
WHERE: In person at the New England Aquarium’s Simons Theatre, 1 Central Wharf, Boston. The lecture will also be livestreamed via Zoom.
