While the Victorian notables of Forest Hills lived by rules of etiquette, their letters or journals often revealed their deepest feelings. Socially prominent Anna C. Lowell (d. 1894) used her diary to give opinions about her friends and family. Pauline Agassiz Shaw (d. 1917) (pictured on the left) was concerned that she “had too much”. Her soul-searching led to a lifetime supporting kindergartens, addressing the needs of immigrants and championing women's suffrage. Various notable men also felt that putting pen to paper empowered them to express thoughts that were seldom voiced. Join us for a summer stroll that celebrates Forest Hills residents in their own words.
