How do you give feedback that's honest without being discouraging — and how do you receive it without becoming defensive?


As an artist, giving and receiving critique is integral to growth. Outside of an academic setting, it can be difficult to find a supportive, constructive environment, and for self-taught artists, group critiques can feel intimidating.

CAA invites artists at all stages of their careers to this panel discussion on best practices for group critiques and getting the most out of critiques and portfolio reviews.


Topics include:

Finding and building the right community How to find a critique group that's the right fit, and what makes such groups sustainable over time.

Preparing and presenting work How much context to give, and how to stay grounded rather than over-explaining or becoming defensive.

Turning feedback into action How to sort through conflicting opinions and determine what's worth acting on.

Navigating portfolio reviews What reviewers look for in the first 30 seconds, and how to make the most of a review.

Giving and receiving feedback with honesty and care How to offer honest feedback without discouraging, and receive it without getting defensive.

This event is offered as professional development for CAA artist members, especially as preparation for our upcoming in-person CAA Portfolio Reviews and CAA miniCRITS.


About the Panelists

Hilary Doyle (moderator; co-creator of NYC Crit Club) holds an MFA from Rhode Island School of Design and a BFA from Massachusetts College of Art and Design. She co-founded and teaches for NYC Crit Club, offering community and critique to artists post-BFA/MFA and self-taught artists. She teaches at the College of the Holy Cross.

Janet Loren Hill (co-creator of BossCrit) is a New York City-based artist and educator whose work exists at the intersection of installation and painting. Dripping with absurdity she has built a world around the Chattering Teeth and Hammerhead People who play out propaganda techniques within her paintings, sculptures and performances. Hill received an MFA from Massachusetts College of Art and Design and a BFA from the University of Washington, where she also studied in Rome, Italy as part of the University’s study abroad program. She has exhibited at numerous galleries nationally, including Field Projects Gallery (NYC), Feia (LA), The Border Project Space (NYC), Abigail Ogilvy Gallery (Boston) and Kapow (NYC). Hill has participated in multiple residencies internationally, including Wassaic Project, Anderson Ranch, McColl Center, Beijing Royal School and The Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts (EFA) Studio Program. Hill’s work has been recognized in Artnet, Hyperallergic, The Boston Globe, Boston Art Review and W Magazine. In 2017, Hill was spotlighted in the MFA Annual Edition of New American Paintings by Elisabeth Sherman, Assistant Curator at the Whitney Museum of Art. Most recently, Hill presented a two person exhibition at the Tephra Institute of Contemporary Art, marking her museum exhibition debut. She is currently serving as Assistant Teaching Professor in Studio Art at Ball State University.

Born and raised in New York City, Ben Sloat, founding director of the MFA in Visual Arts program at Clark University in Worcester, MA., earned degrees from UC Berkeley and SMFA/Tufts. His work has been shown in venues such as the Havana Biennial (Matanzas), Radium Art Center (Busan), Kunsthal Charlottenborg (Copenhagen), Museum of Fine Arts (Boston), OKK Raum/29 (Berlin), Dublin City Gallery/The Hugh Lane (Dublin), Peabody Essex Museum (Salem), Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (Richmond), and the Queens Museum. Solo exhibitions include those at Project Space Pilipinas (Lucban), Das Klohauschen (Munich), Steven Zevitas Gallery (Boston), Coop Gallery (Nashville), Galerie Laroche/Joncas (Montreal), Gallery 126 (Galway), Front Gallery (Oakland), and the American Cultural Center (Taipei).

Courtney Stock (founder of BossCrit) is a Boston-based artist and educator whose sculpture and installation work explores material curiosity, embodied process, and imperfection. She holds an MFA from Massachusetts College of Art and Design, a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate from San Francisco Art Institute, and a BA from Bowdoin College. She has exhibited at the Edwards Center for Art and Dance at Bowdoin, Boston University Galleries, the Kniznick Gallery at Brandeis, Spring/Break Art Show, and Praise Shadows Art Gallery. From 2019–2023, Stock founded and facilitated BossCrit, bringing together artists from across Boston and beyond for supportive dialogue. She teaches at SMFA at Tufts University and Massachusetts College of Art and Design.
