Hailed as one of “the most intelligent and innovative dance troupes in Boston” (Beverly Creasey, Boston Arts Review), Luminarium Dance Company returns after a two-year creation period with its newest feature production, HIVELAND. Co-choreographed by Artistic Directors Merli V. Guerra and Kimberleigh A. Holman, HIVELAND ignites the Multicultural Arts Center with the company’s signature imaginative choreography and theatricality.
Immerse yourself among HIVELAND’s athletic and weightless performers as they venture through a portal into the unknown, while composer Christos Zevos sets the pace with a driving electronic score. What lies beyond the hive? What awaits these seven figures, who roam the entirety of the performance hall space, engulfing viewers inside a new environment as they establish a new world order? Combining contemporary dance with dance theatre, HIVELAND sends its performers and viewers on a journey that goes deeper than the stage space, embodying isolation, communication, power balance, ego, and camaraderie.
HIVELAND’s choreography debuted in its earliest form as a commission for TEDxCambridge (the largest TED Talk event in the world) to an audience of 2,600 at the Boston Opera House in 2016. Since then, the work has expanded into a full-length evening production running roughly one hour, no intermission.
Audience-goers of all ages and backgrounds are encouraged to attend this production. No previous dance- or theatre-viewing experience is needed to enjoy HIVELAND’s dreamlike narrative. Music lovers will especially appreciate Zevos’s powerful electronic score—which provides both atmospheric environment and nuanced rhythmic drive—while the production’s ever-evolving minimalist set will keep viewers engaged with subtle reveals.
HIVELAND will be performed September 21, 22, 28, and 29 at the Multicultural Arts Center in East Cambridge. Tickets can be purchased by visiting luminariumdance.org. Questions about the show and requests for information should be sent to firstname.lastname@example.org
