Description:
We’ll be hiking arguably one of the best mountains in New England, Mount Katahdin. Mount Katahdin is the tallest mountain in Maine and is the northern terminus of the Appalachian. Katahdin is dividing into three separate peaks with two of them counting as 4,000 footers; Hamlin Ridge (4,756 ft.), Baxter Peak (5,267 ft.), and Pamola Peak (4,919 ft.). Hamlin Ridge and Baxter Peak count as 4,000 footers, Pamola Peak does not due to its prominence. Katahdin has incredible 360 views for miles throughout the hike. The plan for this hike is to bag all three peaks, while also making the excursion to Chimney Pond. We’ll start on the Chimney Pond Trail briefly before reaching a junction with the Helon Taylor Trail. The plan is to take the Helon Taylor Trail all the way to the first summit, Pamola Peak. After Pamola Peak, we’ll take the Knife Edge towards the summit of Baxter Peak which is the highest point in Maine. We’ll take the Saddle Trail all the way to the junction with Northwest Basin Trai. Take the Northwestern Basin Trail all the way to another junction with the Hamlin. Take the Hamlin Trail towards our second 4,000 footer of the day, Hamlin Ridge. Following Hamlin Ridge, we’ll continue on the Hamlin Ridge Trail towards the North Basin Trail to the Chimney Pond Trail towards Chimney Pond. Chimney Ponds offers great views of Katahdin from below and a great place to refill water. We’ll head back to Roaring Brook Campground via the Chimney Pond Trail. The total distance of this hike will be 12 miles in a loop. We'll be camping at Abol Campsite and driving to Roaring Brook where the trailhead is located.
Total distance of hike: 12 miles
Elevation gain: 4,475 ft.
Difficulty: Strenuous
